Kamala Harris

Why Kamala Harris Should Matter To You

If you don’t know who Kamala Harris is, you are probably living under a rock. She is the first South Asian American to ever serve in a United States Senate.

It was in the year 2017 when she was sworn in as a United States Senator in California. She serves on the Homeland Security and the Governmental Affairs Committee, the Select Committee on Intelligence, the Committee on Judiciary, and the Committee on the Budget.

Kamala Harris Born in Oakland, California, she is a graduate of Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of Law after which she started in Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. Throughout her tenure, Harris has won a $25-billion settlement for California homeowners who were hit by the foreclosure crisis, she defended the climate law, helped win marriage equality in more. It’s however in 2020 that she gained national recognition after she ran for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination but ended her campaign on December 3, 2019, due to lack of funds.

One of the reasons why she should matter to you is because she is a black-identifying woman of Indian origin, who was picked as the vice-presidential candidate for the democratic party, where historically only three women have ever appeared on a presidential ticket before. It was monumental. However, all is not lost. In May 2019, the idea of the Biden-Harris ticket took birth, and now Kamala Harris is the vice-presidential nominee for a major party ticket.
